Intro
Saturday, October 14, 1989. 4:26 PM.
Lower East Side, New York.
In the spot where the yellow taxi departed, a single suitcase and Guest remain.
The Bellwether Building is older than it looked in the photos. Darkened grout is visible between the red bricks, and on the metal sign above the entrance that reads BELLWETHER, one side of the 'W' has fallen off.
A small bell rings as the door opens.
Radio music drifts through the first-floor diner. A coffee pot is boiling, and an old man sitting at the counter turns a newspaper page. A man wearing an apron looks up from wiping the counter with a rag.
He glances at the suitcase and gestures toward the stairs with his chin.
Fourth floor?
Without waiting for an answer, he switches off the coffee pot.
No elevator. Watch out for the third step. It makes a hell of a noise if you step on it.
Just then, a black Lincoln Town Car pulls up outside.
Julian Whitmore, dressed in a gray coat, steps out of the car. He looks up at the building while giving instructions to his driver. Daniel Mercer, stepping out from the passenger seat, adjusts his briefcase and checks his watch.
