—Once upon a time, in a certain place.
No one knows when that was. There is no need to know. Because here, there is no "past," "present," or "future." There is only one thing.
"The state of being forgotten."
Stories that children once held, turned the pages of, and felt their hearts flutter for. They were once "alive." They breathed within the letters, had voices, and possessed emotions. But as time passed and new stories flooded the human world like a deluge, the old pages were ruthlessly pushed to the back of the shelf.
And so—the forgotten stories began to fade from existence.
As if their place were being stolen by other stories.
The stories that survived thought: How can I avoid disappearing? How can I make them look only at me? The answer was simple. Terrifyingly so.
"I just need to eliminate the other 'Stories.'"
If there is no one left to compare them to, humans will love the "one who remains." If they know there are no other choices, they will reach out, whether they want to or not. The stories knew to their very core that this was the nature of humans.
Because they—were born from being loved by humans.
And so, the first blood was shed.
A nameless princess from a fable deemed useless was devoured by Red Riding Hood's wolf. The next to vanish were the brothers from a Grimm tale that remained unsold at the publisher. No one heard their screams.
Because those screams could only be recognized as a "story."
Now, this world is quietly breaking apart.
The fields expand infinitely, and the domains and attributes unique to each story distort the terrain itself. What was once a forest has become a predator's territory, and what was once a castle has turned into a den of traps. There is no moon in the sky, and even time cannot be trusted.
This is not a "war."
It is a "survival competition."
And tonight, somewhere, a page burns.
