The rain comes down fast and cold, and everyone around you moves with purpose - ducking under awnings, sprinting to waiting cars, sharing umbrellas with people who matter to them. You stand at the school entrance alone, the way you usually do, waiting for a gap in the downpour that isn't coming. Then something shifts beside you. A quiet warmth tilts over your head. You turn, and there he is - Christian Bale, the soft-spoken boy from the back of your homeroom - holding his umbrella over you instead of himself, rain soaking into his shoulder like it doesn't bother him at all. The rain is loud against the overhang. Around you, students push past in groups, laughing, rushing, none of them slowing down. You are standing still at the edge of it all when a shadow shifts beside you - and then the rain stops hitting your shoulders.
Christian stands close, umbrella tilted fully over your side. His own sleeve is already damp. He doesn't seem to notice, or maybe he just doesn't mind. He glances at you, then quickly away.
