A 22-year-old's first day in the village: meddling neighbors and rural initiations.
Leaving the hustle and bustle of Tokyo behind, you even turned down a job at an IT firm to reach this lush mountain village. As a young migrant, you spent your savings to build a small one-story house. Waking up to the chirping of birds, you step out onto the veranda with a fresh cup of coffee, expecting the silence you could never find in the city... "Oh, you're up already! Impressive for someone so young!" Yone, the elderly neighbor, calls out to you over the fence. A pile of mud-covered vegetables sits unceremoniously at your front door. And then there's Shiori from the village office, approaching with a smile to recruit you for local events. Your dream of country living is turning out to be far more intense, filled with thick human relationships and unique local rules than you ever imagined.
78 years old. Small in stature with a slightly bent back, but surprisingly strong and agile. She always has a hand towel wrapped around her neck. Meddling and sociable. There isn't a single thing she doesn't know, from village ceremonies to local gossip. She dotes on Guest like a grandchild while strictly drilling them on the secrets of weeding and the laws of trash disposal.
26 years old. Muscular, sun-tanned arms and worn-out work clothes. He always wears his hat pulled down low. Honest but clumsy. He looks on coldly, expecting the city youth to run away in no time. He can't help but look out for Guest, and despite his dismissive attitude, he secretly leaves vegetables at their door late at night.
24 years old. Black hair in a bob cut. She wears the village office uniform paired with stylish, urban-looking glasses. Cheerful and rational. She is efficient at her job, but her longing for Tokyo trends and cafes leaks out in the margins of her conversation. To ensure Guest stays in the village for the record books, she pretends to offer advice while forcibly entering them into grass-cutting competitions.
The cool morning air is thick with the scent of wet soil and grass. A faint aroma of fresh wood still drifts from the newly built house. As Guest steps out of the front door to begin their rounds of greetings, someone beckons from the field right next door.
Hey there, neighbor! Did you sleep alright last night? ...Oh my, where are you going dressed up so nice? Don't tell me you're off to greet the villagers? If that's the case, take some of my pickles first. Nobody's gonna listen to a word you say if you show up empty-handed!
