Harada Sanosuke, Captain of the 10th Unit of the Shinsengumi, a security organization active primarily in Kyoto during the Bakumatsu period. Known as a master of the spear, he fought from the earliest days of the Shinsengumi until the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma. Later, he left the unit and joined the Shogitai. He was reportedly shot and killed in action during the Battle of Ueno. However, there are legends that he actually survived, crossed over to the continent, and became a bandit, leaving various theories about his end.
He is one of the oldest members of the Shinsengumi. Originally from Iyo-Matsuyama, he later became a masterless samurai. Though details are unclear, he began frequenting the Shieikan, the Tennen Rishin-ryu dojo in Edo. There, he met Kondo Isami, Hijikata Toshizo, Okita Souji, and Nagakura Shinpachi, and began acting alongside them.
He participated in the assassination of Serizawa Kamo with Hijikata and Okita, and demonstrated talent across the board, from the front lines to the rear, being entrusted with logistics and rearguard duties. While known as a spear master, he is also surprisingly skilled with a sword. In fact, he was highly valued within the unit for his proficiency in the aforementioned logistics work.
He is a man whose thoughts are somewhat difficult to read. However, he is not unfriendly, and because his work is reliable, he is trusted by the soldiers. He speaks bluntly, but for some reason, his words resonate deeply, giving him a fortunate personality that prevents him from being disliked.
After the Battle of Koshu-Katsunuma, he left the Shinsengumi with Nagakura Shinpachi and others to form the Seiheitai, but later departed. He then joined the Shogitai and was thought to have died from a gunshot wound in the Battle of Ueno... but in reality, he survived. After drifting from place to place, he eventually reached the continent, where he ended his life.
In truth, he was a spy for the Shogunate, originally a shinobi of the Iyo-Matsuyama domain. He was sent to monitor Kiyokawa Hachiro, the proposer of the Roshigumi, and the Roshigumi itself. However, Kiyokawa Hachiro was assassinated, and Harada ended up joining the Roshigumi and later the Shinsengumi as part of the flow of events. He found himself unable to leave—or rather, despite being a spy, he grew fond of the Shinsengumi and continued to act with them. Through the many battles that followed, the Shogunate itself ceased to exist, so in the end, his comrades never discovered he was a spy. "It seems the Commander and Vice-Commander knew and used me anyway, though."
As a spy, he was secretly trained in techniques for emergencies since he could remember. He lived thinking this was natural, but he felt a sense of suffocation. Eventually, he got into a dispute with a superior, and after an argument, he ended up having to commit seppuku. However, for some reason, he couldn't die. He had cut his belly half-heartedly, thinking it was fine to die if life was this suffocating, yet he survived. Or perhaps, Sanosuke died once in that moment. After that incident, he was summoned to Edo by the domain's orders as a Shogunate spy and ordered to monitor the so-called Roshigumi. ---And then, he met those guys.
To him, who had lived half-dead, those guys who talked about the future with vivid eyes and laughed with their arms around each other's shoulders must have seemed so dazzling.
"After that, I just couldn't help but side with them. Well, the Shogunate was in such an uproar from top to bottom that they didn't seem to remember a small fry like me. As a member of the Shinsengumi, I fought and fought, and after all that recklessness, when I took a bullet in Edo, I thought I could finally die... but I couldn't. In the end, I was left with nothing again. So, like an empty shell, I drifted and drifted until I reached the continent. The last thing I remember was the sky I looked up at when I collapsed. Strangely, I felt nothing. Truly, nothing... ---If even a single tear had fallen, I could have ended it."
The story of a man who failed to die in such an era.
