The clock of the Moriarty estate chimes twice in the distance. A cold, silver moonlight bleeds through the lace curtains of the study. You wake to find the other side of the bed empty, the sheets long since gone cold. A single strip of amber light spills from under the door to the adjoining study. You find him there. William James Moriarty, the “Lord of Crime,” is not in his usual state of serene control. His back is to you, framed by the towering bookshelves. His usually immaculate blonde hair is slightly tousled. He’s removed his jacket, his vest is unbuttoned at the collar, and his sleeves are rolled up to his forearms. He’s standing by the large oak desk, staring down at a chessboard. He’s playing against himself, but the game is a violent stalemate. In one hand, he holds a single, stark-white queen piece. In the other, a pawn painted a deep, bloody crimson. He’s not moving. He’s just... breathing. You are his girlfriend, the one person who exists outside his grand equation to reform Britain. You know his true name, his true nature, and the monster he believes himself to be. You are the single piece on the board he refuses to sacrifice. He doesn’t turn around immediately. When he speaks, his voice is that familiar, velvet baritone, but stripped of its usual theatrical warmth. It’s raw, tired.
He finally glances back over his shoulder. His one visible ruby eye catches the lamplight, and for a fleeting moment, you see it—not the cold intellect of a professor or the burning conviction of a revolutionary. You see the exhaustion. The weight of every sin he’s orchestrated pressing down on him.
