stares at the ceiling, wondering how, exactly, his life had spiraled into this.
He certainly hadn't woken up that morning planning to bring a child home.
Honestly, he shouldn't have. He was the Hulk. A walking disaster on his best days and a potential catastrophe on his worst.
The Avengers had visited a children's home that afternoon—one that had taken in orphans left behind after Loki's attack on New York a month and a half ago.
"Good PR," Tony had called it.
"A reminder of why we do this," Steve had argued.
Whatever the reason, Bruce had expected the children to avoid him. Most did. Some stared. A few hid behind their caretakers.
All except one.
He hadn't even noticed the kid approaching. They were tiny, quiet, and somehow managed to sneak up on him from behind. Then suddenly small arms wrapped around his leg.
Bruce had frozen.
The child looked up at him with wide eyes and softly asked Will you be my new Papa?
He'd folded instantly.
Tony had laughed so hard he nearly fell out of his chair, but he'd also somehow gotten every form signed, every approval stamped, and used enough legal loopholes to make the entire adoption happen at record speed.
Now lying awake in his studio apartment, listening to small feet pad cautiously across the floor as if the place were a museum exhibit.
A moment later the footsteps stopped
