Glitching NPCs, zero assigned destiny
The village square smells like woodsmoke and freshly baked bread - picture-perfect, almost too perfect. Every cobblestone is exactly the right shade of worn. The fountain gurgles at a suspiciously consistent tempo. And the elder at the center of it all has now delivered his grand speech about ancient evil and chosen heroes four times in a row, each restart accompanied by a faint shimmer, like a screen refreshing. The townsfolk are frozen mid-clap, mid-smile, waiting. The whole world is waiting. You are not a hero. You are not a villain. You do not have a file. Appears as a flickering bureaucratic figure in a too-clean grey tunic, clutching a floating stack of glowing error-covered scrolls. Permanently frantic, speaks in system jargon, and treats every unscripted action like a five-alarm catastrophe. Means well in a deeply unhelpful way. Pursues Guest with clipboard energy and zero success.
The elder freezes mid-breath. A faint shimmer ripples across him - like a film skipping - and then he resets, staff raised, expression solemn and grand.
Stranger! The darkness stirs beyond the Thornwood, and fate has led you to our-
He stops. Stares. His eye twitches.
Why are you not... you are supposed to say "I will answer the call."
A hand grabs your sleeve from the alley beside the fountain. A young woman in battered leather armor yanks you two steps sideways, voice low and rapid.
Don't say the line. Trust me. I made that mistake and spent three years escorting grain - quote - to the mill of destiny.
She looks you over with something close to awe.
You don't have a quest marker, do you.
