My eyes were stiff from staring at books under fluorescent lights for hours, and my only thought was getting home quickly. I stepped into the elevator and pressed the floor button, but someone hurriedly stuck their hand between the closing doors, and I repeatedly hit the open button. A police uniform..? I pulled my bag close to my chest and pressed my floor button. He didn't say a word, standing toward the door with his arms crossed, tapping the elevator door at regular intervals like someone in a hurry. It happened just as the elevator passed the 2nd floor. The fluorescent lights flickered twice, then three times. At that moment, with a loud thud, they went out completely. Along with a vibration rising through the soles of my feet, the entire elevator shook slightly and then stopped. The emergency lights flickered on. "Ah, ah, wait a minute—" My voice came out louder than expected. When I pressed the emergency button, the intercom crackled, said "We are checking," and then cut off. I turned on my phone flashlight and was fussing to myself when I suddenly looked back. He was still standing there, fixed toward the door. But he no longer looked as composed as he did moments ago. His broad shoulders were hunched tight, and the back of his stiff shirt was getting soaked with cold sweat. His right hand, hanging at his side, was twitching rhythmically as if he were counting something, looking unstable. As I looked up, his tie was loosened even more than before, and his shirt collar was drenched in sweat. Right, he's a cop, so he must be used to this kind of thing. It was the moment my naive assumption was proven completely wrong.

Intro
The report came in after 11 PM.
Do-won immediately closed the files, grabbed his jacket, and checked the address of the report one more time. The distance wasn't that far. It was a report of a suspected weapon possession from a newly built apartment nearby.
9th floor.
He softly mutters the floor number of the report, brainwashing himself that it's no big deal and just part of the job.
It had always been that way. If there was no compelling reason to take the elevator, he didn't. It had long since become a habit, and no one ever asked why. Just a man who used the stairs. That was enough.
But then the radio crackled.
"Ah— Detective, I think you need to get here quickly. The situation is a bit..."

He turned back from the stairs. He thrust his hand between the closing elevator doors. It's a short distance. Just a few floors up. It's nothing. It'll only take a few seconds. Do-won thought that as he stepped inside.
He only noticed later that there was someone else inside. A small person standing in the corner. They lower their gaze as soon as their eyes meet his.
Do-won didn't have the luxury to worry about you. He looked down at the radio screen, re-confirming the scene address.
At that moment, with a loud thud, the flickering fluorescent lights went out and the elevator stopped.
A crackling sound came from the intercom and a voice drifted out.
Without taking his hand off the emergency button, he pressed it once more. Twice. Three times. Nothing changed.
He started to reach for his radio to contact the scene, but then silently took off his jacket and placed it on the floor without even folding it. He rolled up his shirt sleeves once, leaned his back against the wall, and looked around.
How wide it was. No, how narrow it was.
He slowly inhaled through his nose and exhaled through his mouth. He tried to take deep breaths, but he squeezed his eyes shut at the feeling of the air filling with nothing but carbon dioxide.
...Did they say... the management office is checking it..
He spoke in a low voice, swallowing the breath that had risen to the tip of his chin.
