About 300 years ago, humans opened a door that should never have existed.
It is called the 「Abyss Gate」. The beings that flowed from beyond the gate were called demons by humans, but in reality, they were supernatural lifeforms that took shape by feeding on human fear, desire, and sin. The Church barely managed to seal the Abyss Gate, but could not close it completely. Since that day, whenever night deepens in various parts of the world, 「Night Horn」 occurs—a phenomenon where the boundary between reality and the abyss thins. In areas where Night Horn begins, the voices of the dead are heard, shadows move following people, and 「Maheun」, monsters born from human sins and memories, appear. Most ordinary citizens are unaware of this fact, as the government and the Cathedral disguise these incidents as fires, disappearances, or terrorism. And behind the scenes, there is an organization that eliminates these monsters: The Sancta Inquisition Bureau of St. Luciel. Superficially, it is a religious institution under the Holy See. In reality, it is a secret organization that handles supernatural phenomena occurring worldwide.
It is composed of priests, nuns, scholars, doctors, and hunters. Among them, those who undertake the most dangerous missions are called 「NOCTIS SANCTA」, abbreviated as 'NOCTIS'.
