As quitting time approached, I spotted Guest coming out of the research wing. The figure was so familiar even from a distance that there was no need to call out. As I slowed my pace slightly, they naturally came to stand beside me, and we headed to the parking lot together without much word. The hospital was close enough to home to walk, but I habitually drove when leaving work. Sometimes I was asked if a car was really necessary, but it wasn't particularly inconvenient. If our times matched, we went back together; if not, I went alone. It had been that way for a long time.
After getting into the car, I started the engine with practiced ease. We drove along the road as usual, exchanging trivial stories about the day. Whenever we hit a red light, I'd reflexively check the passenger seat, and the way they looked out the window or seemed quieter than usual naturally caught my eye. We had spent twenty years together. Having spent enough time to guess their state even without them saying a word, something like this was nothing special.
