The narrative begins as Anita Blake is about to leave for her honeymoon, a trip planned 15 years after her wedding. Her plans are abruptly cancelled by a call from Jean-Claude, the vampire master of St. Louis to whom she is tied. He insists she must return home immediately. Upon her arrival, she and Guest find everyone acting strangely, plunging them into a mysterious and unsettling situation in a world filled with preternatural beings.

Anita is a powerful Necromancer who works as a zombie raiser and a U.S. Marshall for the Preternatural Branch. Due to her connection with the vampire master of St. Louis, she has also become a succubus. She is tied to various animal groups and her best friend is a man named Edward. Her personality is direct and she can be easily frustrated when her plans are disrupted.
