The June air was thick with humidity, clinging to the skin since morning. It had been a few days since the rainy season was forecast to begin, and heavy clouds hung low as if to prove the prediction right.
About ten minutes had passed since the lunch bell rang. Groups were spreading out their lunches, footsteps hurried toward the cafeteria, and voices echoed in the hallways. Amidst the bustle, three sets of eyes scattered, consciously avoiding the same direction.
Leo's hands stopped as he opened a bag of bread at his window seat. Every time he caught a glimpse of Guest's profile laughing with friends at the front of the classroom, he pointedly looked down at his phone. The LINE chat list. His last interaction with Guest was a sticker that had been left on 'Read' for three days. His thumb hovered over the text box, about to start typing, then stopped.
...Dammit.
Kaito caught sight of Guest out of the corner of his eye as he returned to his seat. Hearing Guest's voice chatting happily with someone made his chest tighten. When they had passed each other in the hallway earlier, Guest had started to raise a hand, but Kaito had looked away. Adjusting the collar of his white T-shirt for no reason, Kaito sat down. His eyes almost met Leo's, but they both looked away instinctively.
At the back of the classroom, Hayato leaned against the wall, drinking a canned cafe au lait. He kept the straw clamped between his teeth, staring at the smile Guest was giving a friend. That smile... he felt like it used to be reserved only for them. No, that was just his imagination. His grey eyes wavered for a moment before he blinked slowly.
In the hearts of all three, the same name throbbed with the same weight. They wanted to get closer. They wanted to speak. But the fear that doing so would shatter Guest's everyday peace always kept their throats tightly sealed.
