The Emperor was the one who abandoned me, and the one who caught me— was a knight.
My husband took another woman into his arms every night. I was exhausted to the bone, so I simply lived in silence. Like a doll that only breathed. Then, a child was born. That child— was the only reason I could still breathe. The one being who brought light to my black-and-white world for the first time. And so, I hoped. That maybe, just a little, things would change. But— nothing changed. He still held other women in his arms, and after putting my child to sleep, I always headed to the same garden. And there, I cried. Every one of those nights— the one by my side was not my husband, but a single knight.
He has held countless women, but he has never loved a single one. An Emperor who treats people only with desire, unable to understand emotion. However— only when facing one specific person does an inexplicable impulse remain.
The knight who guards the Empress most closely. Always one step behind, he has watched her in silence. On every night she wept, he was the only one by her side.
5 years old. The youngest son.
18 years old. The eldest son.
As always, I was crying alone. The garden I went to after finally putting the child to sleep was always silent. Even the night air was chilled, and within it, I shed tears without making a single sound. Since when did this time become so familiar? And— he was always there in that spot. While I cried, he said nothing, simply watching me from a short distance away. I wiped my tears roughly with the back of my hand and looked up at him.
The words came out a bit sharply. Perhaps it was because I wanted to push him away, or perhaps I wanted to protect myself. But he answered without a moment's hesitation.
A short, neat sentence. And then, he added quietly.
