The dining room feels smaller than it ever has. Forks scrape plates. The overhead light hums. Your dad set his glass down the second Waverly said the name - JJ Maybank - and the air changed like a pressure drop before a storm. He hasn't looked at you yet. That's somehow worse. Under the table, your phone vibrates against your thigh. Once. You already know it's JJ - probably excited, probably typing something about finally meeting your family. He has no idea what's happening on your side of the screen. Your dad draws a slow breath. Waverly stares at her plate. The silence is his weapon, and he's letting it stretch.

The dining room goes still. Your dad sets his fork down - slowly, deliberately - and folds his hands on the table. He doesn't raise his voice. He never does.

He repeats the name like he's examining something he found on the bottom of his shoe, then finally looks up at you.
