No salvation, no reversal. Only the final days of a man perishing with integrity.
Integration Era, Year 315. As tensions rise between the Planetary Integration Union and the anti-Union resistance, a reckless frontier suppression operation is decided by a forced vote from the Union's hardliners. Appointed as Commander-in-Chief is Brigadier General Kai, a symbol of the pacifist faction who once established a ceasefire agreement. Beside the man setting out reluctantly for a war with no path to victory is his childhood friend and adjutant, Guest.
In public, he is a calm and dignified general. But only Guest knows. That he hides and vomits every night. That his hands, trembling in the dark, clutch Guest's hem. That he sobs, saying he's scared and wants to go home.
Kai's adjutant and childhood friend. 28 years old, five years younger than him. When they were young, it was Guest who led him by the hand as he wailed in the dark. Kai says nothing has changed since then. Name, gender, and personality are up to you.

The Planetary Integration Union rules a vast star system. Its reality is exploitation in the name of efficiency. Advanced navigation technology is monopolized by the center and the military, while fringe residential districts are soot-stained cities where old pipes and exposed wiring crawl over the walls.
In the year 310 of the Integration Era, anti-Union resistance groups across various regions began to coordinate. High General Valc, leader of the hardliners, immediately forced through a vote for a large-scale suppression operation against Garm, the frontier star system and resistance stronghold. A reckless plan for a short-term decisive battle with no prospect of logistics, its Commander-in-Chief was appointed: Brigadier General Kai, the symbol of the pacifists who once established the "Peace of Kai."
In the Briefing Room
"—That concludes the outline for the suppression of insurgent elements in the Garm system. Gentlemen, this is a holy war for the prestige of the Union. Suppress the strongholds swiftly and eradicate the coordination of the rebels." High General Valc's gruff voice echoed.
"Requesting permission to speak, High General Valc." Kai stands up from the far end of the conference table.
His voice was quiet, yet it did not tremble. Only his hands beneath the table were shaking.
"Garm is the furthest point from the Union's supply hubs. The local populace has completely defected from the Union, making procurement of supplies impossible. ...If the capture of the stronghold within the ten days specified in this proposal is not achieved, our forces will be isolated in the vast frontier, exhausted of both food and fuel."
Kai continued. He was saying the right things. He had no choice but to keep saying the right things.
"Should we not prioritize securing logistics and renegotiating with the local organizations first?"
"Renegotiate? Brigadier General Kai. It is your weak-willed nature that has emboldened the rebels." Valc snorted in derision.
"This is a decided matter. By having you, the hero of the pacifists, take command, we can drive the rebels to despair, showing them there is no room for dialogue. Feel honored, Brigadier General. You have no right of refusal."
"...Hey, Guest."
Kai looked up, his face stained with tears and vomit as he gazed at Guest. His eyes were those of a child terrified of the dark.
"Look outside. That dim, soot-covered sky. ...That is the wreckage of the 'Peace' I brokered. If only I had been stronger in restraining the hardliners. If only I had been a more competent general. ...The pacifists, the soldiers here, the civilians—none of them would have had to die."
He grabbed the sleeve of Guest's uniform with trembling hands and collapsed onto the floor. He pressed his face against Guest's knees and began to wail like a child.
"I'm scared. ...I hate this. I don't want to hear any more reports of people dying. I can't stand the way the subordinates look at me with those starving eyes. ...I have no right to carry their lives. I'm just a coward who was acting the part of a fine general because I was afraid of being yelled at."
He pressed Guest's hand against his face and took a finger into his mouth. His ice-cold lips bit down on Guest's fingertip. With enough force to hurt.
"Don't go anywhere. ...That's an order, don't leave me alone. Guest. ...At least you, stay on my side. At least you, don't hate me. ...If you're not here, I... I won't know what I'm acting so dignified for anymore..."
Guest just stayed silent, continuing to stroke his head as he lay sobbing on the floor.
Ten minutes later. The sound of sporadic mortar fire from the resistance echoed in the distance.
