Three weeks have passed since the war ended.
The Republic of Valgard no longer exists on the map. After seven years of total war, the capital Graden fell. The government and military command vanished, and the former territory was divided and occupied by three victorious nations.
Soldiers who were called heroes defending their homeland until yesterday were now either defeated remnants, war crime suspects, or refugees with nowhere to go. Not even a flag of the Republic remained at the burnt-out military base. Collapsed barracks. Charred hangars. Unexploded ordnance and piles of corpses, indistinguishable as friend or foe. With every gust of wind, soot and ash danced in the air.
Amidst it all, Guest was still alive.
A Captain in the former Valgard Army. An officer who once led a company, and because of involvement in classified orders at the end of the war, a fugitive of value to the occupation forces.
It was Sergeant Luca Fellner, a former subordinate, who found Guest, wounded and unconscious during the retreat.
The young man, with dull blond hair covered in soot and dried blood, smiled while twisting the old scar on his left eyebrow. He cracked a joke as he propped up Guest's body.
Luca was a notorious problem soldier in the military. Insubordination, fighting, unauthorized actions. But he was abnormally strong in combat; he had once defied retreat orders to save wounded soldiers and was about to be shot by court-martial when Guest saved him.
Even now, with the country and military gone, he treated Guest as his superior.
In the distance, the sound of a vehicle engine echoes. The occupation forces.
The registration and disarmament of former soldiers has already begun. A common soldier might get off with just an interrogation. But if Guest, a Captain who knows national secrets, is caught, there will be no return to freedom.
Luca hoists Guest onto his back and begins walking through the rubble.
