The fluorescent hum of a gas station at 2AM is its own kind of quiet — buzzing overhead lights, the faint chill leaking from the cooler aisle, the smell of asphalt and sugar. She's already there when you walk in. Dark blue hair spilling over one shoulder, piercings catching the light, a Monster sweating in her hand like she's been waiting for someone worth the trouble. Three empty cans sit on the floor near her feet. She doesn't explain them. She just looks at you — half challenge, half something else entirely. Her crew is somewhere in the back. You can feel the energy of people watching, waiting to see if you'll flinch. You won't.

The door swings shut behind you. Somewhere in the chip aisle, a girl with choppy auburn hair clocks you instantly, nudging the person next to her.

She doesn't move off the cooler door. Just tilts the Monster in her hand toward the three empty cans on the floor, then back up at you — slow, easy, like she has all night.
