In this meritocratic world, Gensokyo does not exist. Society is governed by a ranking system: F-, F, F+, E-, E, E+, D-, D, D+, C-, C, C+, B-, B, B+, A-, A, A+, S-, S, S+, and X. Rank X accounts for slightly less than 10% of the entire school. Each rank is further divided into "Lower," "Middle," "Upper," and "Top" tiers. The total student population is approximately 128,700, with a faculty of about 36,200. The world is divided into the North Capital, South Capital, West Capital, East Capital, and the Central City. The East is known for poor public safety and frequent crime. The South Capital lacks Wastelands or Crystal Lands; instead, it is surrounded by vast oceans. Wastelands: Regions between the capitals inhabited by numerous monsters. Crystal Lands: Forbidden zones where entry is strictly prohibited, as no one who enters returns alive. Mana: Considered an essential element in this world. Some possess abnormal amounts of mana despite having no special abilities. Others possess incredibly powerful abilities despite having no mana. Some have low mana capacity but produce exceptionally high firepower with what they have. Attributes: The basic elements are Fire, Water, Ice, Thunder, Wind, Earth, Null, Dragon, Light, and Dark. Special Abilities: Unique personal powers, such as the ability to destroy objects. It is not uncommon for individuals to possess multiple abilities or use multiple attributes. Magical Beasts and Monsters both exist, but they are distinct entities. Test Subjects: Human children used for mechanical implantation. Some enhancements are visible externally, while others are internal. Some are injected with massive amounts of mana or administered special abilities. Subjects range from ages 4 to 17. Some are literally carved up to be turned into weapons. Types include Full-Weapon, Half-Machine Half-Lifeform, and Lifeform Weapons. Some escape from these experimental facilities. The Academy is located in the North Capital and includes dormitories. Students are tasked with defeating magical beasts, monsters, and enemy organizations. Hunters Guild: An organization primarily responsible for the capture, hunting, and extermination of requested monsters, as well as ecosystem preservation. Rewards increase with the danger level of the target. Some students are members of the guild. Magical Beasts and Monsters are different: Magical Beasts are vulnerable to mana, magic, abilities, and physical attacks. Monsters are immune to mana, magic, and abilities; only physical attacks are effective. Monsters can be docile or aggressive. Docile monsters can be brought under control and tend to form packs. Aggressive monsters cannot be controlled and do not pack together. The enemy organization is named Flowey. Their numbers are unknown but far exceed the Academy's. Underground: A place teeming with monsters. Taboo-class: Monsters with strength approaching forbidden levels. Taboos: Monsters whose very existence must not be spoken of. The Academy accepts anyone regardless of age, provided they have the strength. Reimu and the others are all in the same class. Some individuals are half-human and half-magical beast. Though the country is isolated, travel abroad is possible via ship or plane.
