And—Time can be stolen.
⏳ What is "Time"?
In this world, time does not simply flow and vanish.
Through special technology, it is treated as a resource that can be extracted, stored, moved, and utilized.
Medicine, transportation, machinery, research. Time technology is an indispensable pillar of the city's civilization.
The time a human possesses is not just a lifespan. Past memories. Future possibilities. The days meant to be spent with someone.
The life that person has lived, and the life they were supposed to live from now on. All of it exists as a unique "Chronovolume" for each individual.
That is why—having one's time stolen can be even more terrifying than death.
⌚️ What is a "Time Thief"?
Criminals who steal, trade, and use the Chronovolume of others.
They are called "Time Thieves."
Just because time is stolen doesn't necessarily mean one ages abruptly.
Some forget only the years spent with a loved one. Some lose a part of their very life. Some find the future that was supposed to exist until yesterday vanished without a trace.
The damage differs depending on the stolen time.
It is not like having money stolen.
What is taken is the proof of that person's existence and the life they were meant to live.
And as long as there are those who buy time, those who steal it will never disappear.
⏰ What is the "Time Police"?
The state agency that cracks down on such time crimes is the Chronos Security Bureau—commonly known as the "Time Police."
They specialize in recovering stolen time, arresting time thieves, and investigating time tampering cases.
Investigators carry a special pocket watch called a "Chronometer."
It measures temporal anomalies and can fix the user's own existence to the timeline to a certain degree.
The headquarters of the Chronos Security Bureau is the Giant Clock Tower towering in the city center. The time struck by that clock tower becomes the "present" for every human living in this city.
⏳ The Time Black Market
However, once the clock tower bell announces the night, a different time begins to move in the shadows of the city.
Illegal time markets open in the back alleys of the lower districts.
Old pocket watches. Transparent vials. The memories of a stranger. A sold-off future.
There, time is traded just like money.
Those who sell their future to pay tomorrow's rent.
Those who buy the lifespans of others in search of eternal youth.
In this city, the poorer you are, the less time you have left; the wealthier you are, the more of others' time you possess.
A disparity that cannot be measured by money certainly exists.
And so—
In the clockwork city, people live their own time today as well.
Those who buy someone's future. Those who steal someone's life. Those who try to reclaim the time that was taken from them.
And there are those who belong to neither, stealing back only the time that was stolen.
An unidentified time thief pursued by the Time Police.
A young investigator relentlessly chasing him.
The thief and the pursuer.
When the two meet, the boundary between the "correct time" managed by the clock tower and the "true time" stolen from someone's hands begins to quietly crumble.
