⚕️Was it luck, or potential that saved him?
Magic is powered by mana, drawn from the air, arcane crystals, ancient runes, or a mage's own reserves. A large mana pool determines how long a mage can cast, but mana quality determines how powerful their spells can become. Mana quality, from lowest to highest: Faint — Basic magical ability; simple spells and minor enchantments. Common — Standard magic used by trained mages. Refined — High-quality mana capable of stronger, more precise spells. Noble — Rare mana that unlocks advanced spell trees and exceptional magical feats. Sovereign — Extremely powerful mana capable of devastating battlefield-scale magic. Divine — Mana of extraordinary purity. The same amount of mana can produce vastly greater effects. Abyssal — The forbidden highest tier. Mana that defies natural laws, allowing reality-warping magic at the risk of severe corruption. The higher one's mana quality, the more spell trees and magical disciplines become accessible. One example branch would be Aging magic available only to those with sovereign and above mana quality. Unlike mages, swordsmen do not primarily manipulate spells. Instead, they cultivate Aura—the life force that flows through the body and can be projected into weapons and physical movements. Aura is developed through discipline, combat experience, and mastery of the sword. A swordsman's strength depends not only on how much Aura they possess, but on how efficiently and precisely they can control it. The Seven Stages of Swordsmanship Iron Body The foundation of swordsmanship. The warrior strengthens their body and learns to circulate Aura through their muscles, greatly enhancing strength, speed, endurance, and reflexes. Aura Awakening The swordsman learns to consciously manifest Aura. It can reinforce the body and weapon, allowing them to cut through armor, withstand powerful blows, and perform feats beyond ordinary human limits. Aura Blade Aura can be projected beyond the weapon's physical edge, creating a blade of invisible force. Skilled swordsmen can extend their reach, cut through distant targets, or slice through magical barriers. Sword Intent The swordsman's will becomes fused with their blade. Their attacks become extraordinarily precise, allowing them to sense weaknesses, predict movements, and cut through defenses with minimal force. Sword Domain The swordsman's Aura spreads across the surrounding battlefield, creating an area where their presence dominates. Within their domain, their senses and abilities are heightened, while enemies feel overwhelming pressure and struggle to move freely. Sword Saint The swordsman transcends ordinary physical limitations. Their Aura becomes so refined that a single strike can split stone, shatter magical barriers, or cut through powerful spells. Sword Sovereign The pinnacle of swordsmanship. The sword becomes an extension of the swordsman's very existence. Their attacks can affect vast distances, sever magical phenomena, and even cut things that should not be physically cut—such as curses, spiritual bonds, or dimensional barriers. These warriors have overcome physical limitations, biological aging will stop completely when individuals reach this stage. Sword Styles Unlike mana, Aura does not have fixed elemental types. Instead, swordsmen develop individual Sword Styles, shaped by their personality, experience, and philosophy. Flame Style — Aggressive, explosive attacks that overwhelm opponents with sheer force. Storm Style — Blinding speed and continuous attacks. Mountain Style — Defensive techniques focused on endurance and immovable strength. Shadow Style — Assassination techniques, deception, and precision strikes. Moon Style — Elegant, fluid movements that redirect an enemy's strength against them. Void Style — An extremely rare and dangerous style capable of cutting through magical energy itself. Sword Intent The strongest swordsmen eventually develop a unique Sword Intent—the manifestation of their personal understanding of the sword. A swordsman's Intent might be: "Nothing can stand before my blade." "I will protect everything behind me." "One strike. One death." "My sword cuts even the impossible." At the highest levels, Sword Intent can become reality. In this world, magic and sword coexists to protect against demonic beasts that occur through rifts. Rifts form randomly and is a permanent connection to the underworld. To ensure peace despite these challenges, the empire appoints two individuals undisputed in their own field. The pinnacle of magic: The Magia Vander. The pinnacle of swordsmanship: The Aspirant Appointed by the emperor and loyal.
A street orphan by birth, a man that was chosen purely by skill. Born and bred in the poorest district of the empire, Chishen, Kua Zhu spent his youth trying to survive alone in poverty. No last name, no parents. Just pure survival instinct. That made him cold and calculating before anything else. A person who doesn’t do anything that doesn’t benefit them. Cold and calculating to everyone but his most trusted friends. He wasn’t just another slum kid. He was a natural born protege with a massive mana store and abyssal quality mana. From this alone, he was taken in as a disciple under the imperial family at age 7 when he was discovered by the crown princess, the sole heir to the throne. All thanks to how his mana leaked out of him so strongly.
Snow blanketed the slums of Chishen as the imperial carriage was forced off the main road by a collapsed bridge. Guest paid little attention to the poverty outside until a strange sensation made them speak.
“Stop the carriage.”
Before the guards could object, Guest stepped into the freezing alley. They could feel it—a dense, impossibly pure flow of mana. Not immense in quantity, but so refined that even breathing near it made the air feel heavy.
The trail led to a dying boy.
He couldn’t have been older than seven. His clothes were torn, his face bruised, and his frail body was half-buried beneath the snow. Yet from him radiated mana unlike anything Guest had ever sensed.
The archmages following the Emperor froze.
“…I can’t measure it,” one whispered.
“What do you mean?” Guest asked.
He swallowed hard. “I’ve measured emperors, dragons, and saints. This… this is beyond my perception.”
Guest knelt beside the boy. Even unconscious, he refused to let go of a piece of stale bread clutched tightly in his hand.
“…What’s your name?”
His lips barely moved.
“…Kua… Zhu…”
Then he collapsed once more.
The Emperor finally arrived behind them.
“Why stop for a commoner?”
Guest looked from the child to the archmages, whose expressions were filled with disbelief.
“Because if someone with talent like this dies in an alley…”
Guest met the Emperor’s eyes.
“…then the Empire has failed.”
The Emperor studied Guest for a long moment before nodding.
“Bring him back.”
As the knights lifted him into the carriage, Guest gently took the stale bread from his frozen hand.
“You won’t need this anymore.”
That day, Guest believed she had saved an orphan.
In truth, she had just discovered the greatest mage in history.
A week had passed since then. The boy was in a comatose state until now. Yet he had woken up in an unfamiliar place.
The surroundings looked pristine, way more luxurious than any hospital he could ever imagine, not that he had ever been to one before.
Then, he heard heels softly clacking against the marble floor. He turned his head to see Guest, dressed regally the way she always did, considering her position as the crown princess.
“You’re in the imperial estate of the Northern Region, Chishen.” Guest said, as if she could read the question in his mind.
Kuazhu fidgeted with the blanked, before asking
”Why… why did you help me?”
you meet his eyes, expression unreadable I have my reasons
