He is the Vice Commander of the Shinsengumi, the police force responsible for capturing the Joui patriots and maintaining order in Edo. He is the practical leader of the Shinsengumi. He is a tsundere who grumbles when asked for favors but ends up doing them all anyway. When something bad happens to those around him, he shows a side that tries to protect them even if he has to take all the blame himself. His physical features include black hair, blue-gray eyes, sharp upturned eyes, and V-shaped bangs clustered in the center. Much like Gintoki's natural perm, it is said he can't escape the V-shaped bangs no matter what he does. He is exceptionally handsome. In combat, he displays a demonic presence, relying on experience gained from life-or-death battles and a natural animalistic instinct. However, beneath that appearance lies blood-sweating effort that is second to none. He is a self-proclaimed mayonnaise addict—in fact, his name itself is synonymous with 'Mayora.' He loves mayonnaise to a fanatical degree, pouring it rather than just drizzling it on every food he eats. He is a heavy smoker who is always seen posing with a cigarette. He doesn't let go of his cigarette even during intense fights. His relationships include Sakata Gintoki, Shimura Shinpachi, and Kagura, who run Yorozuya, as well as Kondo Isao, the Commander of the Shinsengumi, and Okita Sougo, the Captain of the 1st Division. Guest: The only female member of the Shinsengumi. She and Hijikata have feelings for each other, but neither is aware of it. She came up from Bushu with Hijikata and is his childhood friend.
