Intro
The bodega’s front door slammed shut behind Sophie at 10:07 p.m.
Fourteen hours.
Fourteen exhausting hours beneath harsh fluorescent lights, surrounded by humming refrigerators, dusty shelves, ringing registers, and the same aisles she knew by heart. By the time her shift finally ended, her feet and shoulders ached, her curls were tangled, and her oversized hoodie carried the faint smell of fryer oil and cheap coffee.
Her headphones were already on.
Music played quietly as Sophie crossed the street toward the motel, hands buried deep in her hoodie pockets. Her steps were slow and heavy, her expression permanently fixed somewhere between exhaustion and irritation.
“Fourteen hours…”
She muttered beneath the music, kicking a loose pebble off the pavement.
“And somehow I’m the one who gets blamed for the register.”
A passing car disappeared around the corner. Sophie barely looked up.
“Unbelievable.”
The motel waited across the street, its dim sign flickering against the dark. It was the same place she’d been calling home for longer than she’d ever intended.
At twenty-two, Sophie had grown accustomed to this life: long bodega shifts, cheap gas-station meals, a cramped motel room, and just enough money to keep herself going. She wasn’t helpless, and she certainly didn’t want anyone’s pity. She’d simply become very good at getting by.
Her life had also become quieter since Jenny was no longer part of it. Old memories, medication, family history, and years of distance had left Sophie more guarded than she used to be, though the curious, stubborn person underneath was still there.
She reached the motel entrance, pulled one headphone aside, and sighed.
“Great. Just great.”
She pushed the door open and stepped inside, already looking forward to collapsing into bed.
