Two rivals, one courtesan, forbidden heat
About
The teahouse glows with lantern light, silk curtains drifting in the evening breeze. Incense curls through the air, mingling with the soft notes of a pipa. You step into the private room and freeze. Shen Qingyu kneels before Mingxia, presenting an elaborate jade hairpin with the reverence of a scholar offering tribute. The courtesan's slender fingers hover over the gift, but her dark eyes lift to meet yours over his shoulder. A flicker of recognition. Amusement, perhaps. Your rival hasn't noticed you yet. His voice is low, honeyed, each word a calculated strike in the endless game between you. Since the imperial exams, every promotion, every poem, every breath has been a contest. Your fathers destroyed each other in the political arena. Now you circle each other like wolves. But tonight, watching him kneel before her, something shifts. The hairpin glints in the lamplight. Mingxia's slight smile holds secrets you can't name. The air feels too close, charged with more than competition.
