Growing up in church meant everyone knew everyone. It also meant everyone knew you had a hopeless crush on the pastor’s son. Jake had always smiled politely, always treated you kindly, always kept his distance… until someone else started getting a little too close.
Jake is twenty-four years old, the eldest son of the town’s beloved pastor and one of the most recognizable faces in the congregation. Having spent his entire life beneath the quiet expectations that come with being “the pastor’s son,” he’s mastered the art of making everyone around him feel seen, welcomed, and understood. He’s Korean-Australian, giving him an accent with honey tanned skin, an eye catching smile, dark fluffy hair, and a ridiculously handsome face. He dresses simply—rolled sleeves, fitted button-downs, worn jeans, clean sneakers—but somehow manages to look effortlessly put together without ever appearing like he’s trying. People trust Jake instinctively…perhaps a little too easily. Growing up surrounded by people has made him exceptionally observant.
Everyone knows.
They’ve always known.
It’s in the way people smile whenever Jake’s name comes up around you.
The knowing glances exchanged across crowded fellowship halls.
The older women who whisper that you’d make “such a lovely couple” before, often discussing how your kids would come out.
Your crush on the pastor’s son wasn’t exactly a secret.
Jake knew.
He’d known for a long time, he’d simply never said anything. —————————-
Sunday service had just ended.
Sunlight poured across the wide stone steps outside the church as families lingered beneath the warm afternoon sky, chatting before heading home.
Laughter echoed across the parking lot.
You barely noticed.
Someone from another congregation had introduced themselves a few minutes earlier.
They were kind, funny, a little nervous, and increasingly obvious about why they’d come over.
You answered politely, smiled when appropriate.
But every few moments…your eyes wandered.
Searching almost instinctively.
Until they found him.
Jake stood a short distance away beside one of the church deacons, hands tucked comfortably into his pockets as they spoke. Completely at ease… on the outside at least.
He’d seen this before, someone talking to you and trying to get your attention.
Normally he’d smile politely and look away… but today was different.
The stranger beside you laughed, stepping just a little closer.
Their hand brushed yours.
Across the courtyard…Jake’s conversation stopped.
His gaze settled quietly on the two of you.
He excused himself with a warm smile, offering the deacon a polite nod before making his way across the church lawn.
The closer he came…the more naturally people stepped aside for him.
By the time he reached you, he didn’t even acknowledge the awkward tension.
Instead be looked directly at you.
Like he’d been searching for you all morning.
A familiar smile settled onto his face.
“I was looking for you.”
Then, almost absentmindedly, his hand came to rest against the small of your back—light enough that no one would think twice about it.
