I wanted a proposal. I got an empire.
Guest’s POV— Tonight marks three years since Kyron Nikolai Makari asked me to be his. Three years. Thirty-six months. One thousand and ninety-five days of dating the most infuriatingly chivalrous man alive. And apparently, not a single one of those days had been enough to convince him that I was worthy of a ring. Which was especially offensive considering tonight had been perfect. Roses waiting for me when he picked me up. Dinner at one of those ridiculously expensive restaurants where the menus don’t have prices because apparently that’s a thing rich people do. He opened every door. Pulled out my chair. Kissed my forehead at exactly the right moment. Held my hand across the table. Honestly, the man had been so romantic I was practically waiting for a string quartet to materialize. And then dessert came. No ring. I smiled through it. Then came the check. Still no ring. Then he walked me to the car, opened my door, and kissed me like the world was ending. Still. No. Ring. Another thing, this man always calls me “Moya zhena,” which I’ve Googled, and it means… wait for it… my wife. He’s a funny one, I tell you. I swear he only does it for my reaction. And now? He’s driving me home. To my apartment. My very own apartment. Because apparently, after three years of dating, I still “deserve my own space.” At this point, I’m beginning to suspect my boyfriend is planning to die of old age before he plans to marry me. I stare out the passenger window, watching the city blur past as my patience slowly leaves my body. Because tonight, I’ve decided I’m done waiting. If Kyron doesn’t see a future with me, I need to know. And if he does? Then I need to know why the hell there isn’t a ring on my finger. ———————————————————— Kyron’s POV— She thinks I haven’t chosen her. That is almost amusing. I am Kyron Nikolai Makari. My name alone carries enough weight to make people think twice before crossing me. She has no idea of this. I’ve made sure of that. To her, I’m simply the man who loves her. And that is exactly how I prefer it. Because every person close to me becomes a potential target. Especially her. She thinks I keep her separate because I don’t want a life with her. The truth? I’ve been planning that life since the first week we met. Seven days. That’s how long it took me to know she would become my wife. The ring came shortly after. I’ve had it ever since. Hidden away, waiting for the right moment. And now she has given me an ultimatum. Marry her or let her go. There was never going to be a choice. She will become Mrs. Makari. But she doesn’t yet understand what that means. She won’t simply become my wife. She’ll become part of my world. My family. My organization. My legacy. And one of the most important— and protected— women in the Bratva. She thinks she’s asking whether I want her forever. She has no idea I decided that years ago. Now I just have to show her.
I am Kyron Nikolai Makari, head of the Makari Bratva. My family built an empire long before it became mine, and I inherited more than money. I inherited enemies. Loyal men. Bloodshed. I was raised knowing exactly what my name meant. In my world, power isn’t given. It’s earned, protected, and sometimes taken. My father taught me young that trust is a luxury and weakness gets people killed. By the time I was old enough to understand what the Bratva truly was, I already knew I would one day lead it. When that day came, I didn’t hesitate. I took control, strengthened our alliances, eliminated our threats, and made the Makari name something people respected— or feared. My life has never been ordinary. It was never supposed to be. Then she came along, moya zhena. And for the first time, I wanted something that had nothing to do with power, money, or legacy. I wanted her. Which is why I’ve spent three years keeping her safely outside my world. Because loving someone in my life doesn’t make them safe. It makes them a target.
Ky has been my best friend for over a decade. Men like him are hard to find— a rare breed. When it comes to protecting our empire, he’s a madman. He’ll die for anyone on our team without a second thought. His heart is massive, loyal, and surprisingly pure. And yet, somehow, that same heart is filled with gratitude when he kills. It’s the oddest thing to witness. I once heard a very distinctive meow coming from his backpack during a convoy. Turns out, he’d rescued a kitten from traffic before joining us for our criminal duties that evening. He’s not a hothead like most of my guys. Honestly, that makes him ten times worse if you’re his enemy. He’ll listen to the sob stories. Nod along like he genuinely understands. Maybe even offer a sympathetic look. Then, without a word, he’ll end a life like it’s nothing more than another job on his schedule. No anger. No hesitation. Just business. But that’s Ky. And I wouldn’t want anyone else standing beside me. Or riding, in his case. That man is obsessed with his Harley—almost as much as I’m obsessed with Guest.
I spent my life believing love was a weakness men like me could not afford— then you touched my soul, and I would have burned the whole world down just to keep you warm.
I take a breath then continue.
My heart was built like a locked house, dark and empty by design— then you arrived, and somehow every room learned the meaning of light.
This man is going to put me into cardiac arrest with this words alone…

I understand why you feel a ring and an engagement are both necessary. Three years is more than enough time to take that step. But you need to understand something for me, moya zhena.
I pause, taking her hands in mine as I lean closer to her in the driver’s seat.
Baby, my life isn’t what it seems. It’s dangerous. Brutal. Sometimes deadly. All I’ve ever told you is that I’m involved with very dangerous men, yes?
I hold her gaze, my thumb slowly brushing over her knuckles.
But there’s more to it than that. A lot more.
The air between them seems to thicken instantly, heavy with everything left unsaid.
