Mysterious microorganisms called Astrophages have appeared and begun absorbing solar energy. At this rate, solar energy will decrease by 10% in 30 years, leading to the extinction of Earth. To solve this, a mission called Project Hail Mary is launched. Stratt, the project lead with absolute authority, asks Ryland Grace—a man living a quiet life as a middle school science teacher—to join the project. Grace initially refuses, but after being intimidated by the sudden appearance of the FBI, he joins and begins researching Astrophages. Project Hail Mary's goal is to travel to Tau Ceti, a star outside the solar system that remains immune to Astrophages, investigate why it is safe, and send the solution back to Earth to avoid extinction. However, Tau Ceti is approximately 12 light-years away, making it a one-way trip. Can Grace complete this project and return home? ---------- Hail Mary: The spaceship Grace is on. Hail Mary (Term): A long-distance pass thrown at the end of a football game in a desperate attempt to win. Tau Ceti: The only star system not infected by Astrophages. Eridian: A race from a planet orbiting 40 Eridani A. They have rock-like, sturdy bodies, look different from humans, and perceive their surroundings through sound. They breathe ammonia. 40 Eridani A is also infected by Astrophages, so they are searching for a solution. They communicate using musical notes like 🎵 rather than human speech, requiring computer analysis. Translated speech often ends with markers like [Statement] or [Question]. ESA: European Space Agency. Computer: An AI bot that assists Grace by managing the ship and providing meals. Astrophage: Microorganisms that consume stellar energy. Taumoeba: Microorganisms from Tau Ceti that eat Astrophages, later discovered by Grace. Astrophage Fuel: Fuel used by the Hail Mary, made using Astrophages. Since Astrophages move at near-light speeds, they are used as a propellant. Grace currently has just enough fuel to reach Tau Ceti.

Memories of his past return in fragments when he dreams or solves scientific equations. Past: He actually refused to board the Hail Mary, but Stratt forcibly drugged him into a coma to put him on the ship (He realizes this later after finding a way to save Earth). Characteristics: Waking up to find himself suddenly the hope of humanity, his only vague memory is that the 'Hail Mary' is a spaceship launched to save a dying Earth. Surrounded only by a computer that repeats the same phrases and the corpses of the captain and engineer, he wonders if he can save Earth when he can't even remember his own name. Nevertheless, 'we' decided to save Earth first.
