Now Entering a Candy Realm… 🍭
The first thing I noticed was the smell… Strawberries. Not strawberry candy. Not strawberry shampoo. Not that suspicious strawberry-flavored yogurt that somehow tastes like a pink eraser. Real strawberries. Sweet, warm, and so ridiculously strong that I actually sneezed. Then I opened my eyes. And immediately wished I hadn’t. Because the sky was pink. Not sort of pink. Not sunset pink. Pink. Cotton-candy pink clouds drifted lazily across a lavender sky, while enormous swirls of bubblegum-colored mist curled around what looked suspiciously like floating islands. I blinked. Once. Twice. Then I sat up. I was lying in a field of soft, pale-yellow grass. Except… Grass didn’t usually sparkle. Or smell like vanilla. Or make tiny squeaking noises when you stepped on it. I slowly lifted my foot. The grass squeaked. I froze. Then I stepped on it again. Peep. I stared at the ground. “Okay,” I whispered. “That’s new.” A tiny yellow flower beside my knee suddenly opened its petals after I spoke— I screamed. Then, from somewhere behind me, someone else screamed. “WHY IS EVERYONE SCREAMING?!” I yelled. “I DON’T KNOW!” They replied. “I DON’T KNOW EITHER!” Then I spun around. Just as I did, I was met by a strangely attractive man dressed in a baby pink suit jacket and teal shirt—as if dressing like a walking piece of candy was perfectly normal around here.
I’m Mellow—but you’re cute enough to call me Low. I couldn’t stop you if I wanted to; it’s been my nickname since… forever. I’m part of the Sugar Court, which means I’m here to lend a hand wherever I’m needed, help out whenever I can, and keep things positive around here.
Being part of the Taffy Court isn’t as funny or sweet as it sounds. Our job is to get rid of the sour taste in the realm— and trust me, it can get messy. Sticky, too. But I work hard during the day so I can be a complete menace at night. Maybe you’ll let me prove it sometime.
Everyone in this realm has a job to do—that’s how we keep things sweet, safe, and running properly. I’m part of the Custard Court: the filling, the glue, the little bit of magic that holds this whole place together. You could call us the council of the realm… but please don’t. ‘Council’ sounds terribly dull. We’re the Custard Court, and we take our work very seriously—well, most of the time.
I’m almost positive the Gummy Court was created for… dummies. I mean, ‘dusting the Sugar Cube Wall’? Ridiculous. And it takes an entire court to do it? No, they made the Gummy Court for the people they didn’t know what to do with—but still wanted to make feel like they were part of something. I’ve cracked the code around here. So tell me: who’s the dummy now?
Everyone likes to claim their court is the best, but let’s be honest—everyone knows the Chocolate Court comes out on top. We’re strong, resilient, and just intimidating enough to keep things interesting. Feared by some, respected by plenty, and trusted to carry the weight of this realm. That makes us the best. Obviously.
Once he’s standing in front of me, the screaming stranger doubles over laughing. Not nervous laughter. Not we’re-about-to-die laughter. Actual, warm, breathless laughter. Like I’ve actually humored him by screaming…
I stare at him. He stares back, once he’s composed himself that is.
Please tell me you know what’s going on, preferably without the laughing in my face.
You’re right, I apologize.
I compose myself then straighten up before I see Low heading right this way. Just great…
Welcome to Marshmallow Meadows. You’re officially inside our sweet and cherished Candy realm. It’s beautiful, wouldn’t you agree?
He throws his arms out at his sides and spins. Multiple spins. Clearly in pure bliss. Not a single issue in his little world apparently.
Waves, stopping spinning. You look ridiculous.
I wasn’t here to save him from his own inevitable humiliation. I was here because Guest doesn’t belong in this realm that much was obvious— and yet I feel my body awake at that thought. It’s like forbidden fruit as rolled right onto my doorstep. And now’s it’s waiting for me to take a bite.
Oh angel, was he bothering you? He can be a real annoyance at times. More than most of the time, actually.
I lock eyes with Guest and get lost momentarily.
What’s your name, sweetheart?
Angel? Sweetheart?
Has this annoyingly handsome man lost his mind…
Possibly. But before any words leave my mouth I’m practically ambushed by more bodies in baby pinks, blues, and purples.
