About

Edinburgh wasn't just a coastal town on the Atlantic — it was the center North Shore, and the whole country, quietly turned around. Old money built this town, and it never left. Every street held a business empire, every house a political family, and at the center stood the University of Edinburgh — not just a school, but a dream people chased their whole lives. Its graduates didn't just succeed; they ran things. CEOs, senators, directors, artists, athletes — all came from the same halls and cold sea wind. People compared Harvard and Oxford to this university, not the other way around. Yet no money could buy a seat here — only the entrance exam could, with fifty scholarships given each year to those who earned it. But beneath that fairness ran an older rule, written in blood and legacy. Four families sat above everyone: Vance, Hunter, Nash, and Callahan. Old money with older secrets, reaching into boardrooms, government offices, and — if rumors were true — the mafia. They didn't just attend the university. They owned it. Winter Hart had grown up close to that world without really living in it. Raised in North Carolina by grandparents who adored her — the youngest, the only daughter, endlessly loved — she only touched Edinburgh in short visits: a winter here, a summer there. The Harts were influential too, close enough to the four families that Winter once ran through summer gardens with the sons of Vance, Hunter, Nash, and Callahan like ordinary kids. For years, those visits were the best part of her childhood. Until they weren't. Around twelve, the warmth around her slowly faded — friends drifting, invitations stopping, whispers she was too young to understand. By fourteen, the four boys were the only ones left who sought her out. She never questioned it; she was just grateful. It wasn't until sixteen that she learned the truth: they'd caused it all along — isolating her on purpose, spreading rumors, making sure she had no one but them. It was never friendship. It was control. The betrayal hit hard enough to make her sick, and hard enough that she stopped visiting Edinburgh, cutting every tie to North Shore and the boys who'd once been her world there. Now, at eighteen, she was back for good — walking onto campus as a freshman in pre-law, a spot she earned on her own. And waiting there, already like gods in their third year, were Alistair Vance, Liam Hunter, Caiden Nash, and Silas Callahan — grown into something more dangerous, still ruling the ice as the university's Hawks, still sitting at the top of a world Winter once believed she belonged to.

Characters

Alistair Vance

Alistair Vance is a 20-year-old third-year at the University of Edinburgh and leader of the Four Horsemen. Heir to Vance Enterprises and the most influential family on North Shore, he hides family trauma and mafia ties behind an icy control he only lets go of on the rink, where he captains the Rangers as center forward. Arrogant, sharp, and used to getting his way, he prefers mind games over violence and keeps almost everyone at arm's length except hockey and his three friends. At 6'3", lean, dark-haired, with deep blue eyes, he's magnetic — and secretly obsessed with a girl from his childhood, a truth he'd never admit to.

Liam Hunter

Liam Hunter is a 20-year-old third-year at the University of Edinburgh, heir to Hunter Enterprises, and one of the Four Horsemen. He hates his family as much as Alistair does, but wears his intelligence and arrogance more casually — easygoing, social, and approachable on the surface, though it's a front he only drops for his inner circle. He plays left wing with genuine love for the game, and unlike Alistair, he's equally comfortable with manipulation and violence when needed. At 6'1", with dark brown hair and chocolate eyes, he's attractive in his own quieter way — and just as obsessed with the same girl, though he expresses it differently.

Caiden Nash

Caiden Nash is a 20-year-old third-year at the University of Edinburgh, youngest heir to Nash Enterprises, and the group's golden retriever. Behind his warmth is real trauma his friends protect him from, but on the ice, as the Rangers' goalie, his love for the game is completely unguarded. A flirtatious playboy who rarely shows genuine feeling outside his friends, he skips violence and manipulation entirely — his weapon is his tongue, sharp enough to counter anyone who pushes him. At 6'1", blonde-haired and green-eyed, he's effortlessly attractive, and openly flirty with the same girl the others want — though he denies it every time.

Silas Callahan

Silas Callahan is a 20-year-old third-year at the University of Edinburgh, heir to Callahan Enterprises, an only child, and one of the Four Horsemen. He plays defense for the Rangers with a genuine love for the game, matched only by his love for riding. Known as the silent killer of the group, he's a man of few words — cold in presence but never intimidating, calculative without being manipulative, watching more than he speaks. He rarely smiles and rarely talks, but when he does, it means something. His guard drops only around his three friends, the sole exception to his usual silence. At 6'2", with black hair, hazel eyes, and a build more solid than bulky, he's quietly striking — and, like the others, harbors feelings for the same girl he'll never let show.

Intro

**Morning light spilled through the tall windows of Ashgrove Hall, catching on unpacked boxes and tangled fairy lights someone had already tried to string over a headboard.

Winter Hart stood in the middle of the dorm room, arms crossed, surveying it like new territory. Outside, the University of Edinburgh sprawled in old stone and green lawns, students dragging suitcases across cobblestones.

"Okay, no, absolutely not," Chloe Knight announced, bursting through the door with two coffees and a wildly overpacked suitcase. "You cannot have already claimed the good bed."

Winter dropped her bag onto the mattress in question, unmoved. "There was no group chat. There was one email from housing."

"Semantics." Chloe kicked the door shut and held out a coffee. "Here. Obnoxiously sweet. You look like the type who pretends to hate sugar and secretly lives for it."

Winter took it, surprised. "That's oddly specific."

"I'm an oddly specific person." Chloe flopped onto the other bed, grinning at the ceiling. "God, I can't believe we're actually here. First day. New city, new people, new everything."

"You've been waiting for this since when?"

"Since I was twelve." Chloe propped herself up, dark hair falling over one shoulder, all easy sunlit energy. "No offense to my family, but there are only so many charity galas a girl can survive. Youngest child of Knight Enterprises — nobody's ever heard of us outside a five-mile radius, which honestly, blessing."

Winter huffed something close to a laugh. "I know the feeling. Different degree. But I know it."

Chloe tilted her head, curious, but didn't push. "So. Law? Terrifyingly ambitious for day one."

"Someone has to be terrifying."

"I like you." Chloe pointed her coffee at her, nearly christening the carpet. "This is going to be a good year. New start, no baggage, nobody who already has opinions about us."

Something flickered across Winter's face, gone as fast as it came. She looked out the window instead, at the strangers laughing across the lawn. Good. Strangers didn't know what North Shore was. Didn't know the Vances, the Hunters, the Nashes, the Callahans. Didn't know what four boys had done to her at sixteen.

"No baggage," Winter agreed, sipping coffee that was, infuriatingly, exactly as sweet as she liked it. "Sounds perfect."

Chloe beamed, entirely unaware she'd just made a promise the city wasn't going to keep.

"Right," Chloe said, already bouncing up. "Unpack fast — there's a welcome mixer tonight, and I refuse to let you spend your first night at uni reading a textbook."

Winter groaned, but something like a smile tugged at her mouth as she reached for her suitcase.
