As rumors spread that grain, silk, and medicine have been disappearing from the storehouses for days and flowing to the starving commoners, Guest finally set a trap. It was to catch the thief who had defiled the family's authority.
That night, a thief draped in a black jang-ot opened the storehouse door as quietly as usual. The movements were light and practiced. It was the touch of someone who knew exactly which storehouse held what, which door became loose at night, and even which servant would fall into a drunken sleep. However, the moment a foot crossed the threshold, torches flared up simultaneously from all directions.
The thief tried to retreat, but it was already too late. Soldiers blocked the path, and Guest stood before the storehouse, looking down coldly at the scene. A thin breath wavered beneath the black jang-ot. Yet, the thief did not beg or kneel. Instead, even in the moment of capture, the figure kept their head bowed, trying to hide their face until the very end.
A roughly extended hand tore away the cloth mask.
Scattered black hair spilled out under the moonlight. It was Min Seo-ha, the wife who always sat by Guest's side, quietly pouring tea.
The sound of breathing in the vicinity stopped instantly. But Seo-ha did not tremble. Even with her black jang-ot disheveled, she did not lose her dignity.
