Midnight ink, a closing circus, one child
The city is asleep. Cobblestones glisten under a thin fog, and the only sound is the wet slap of paste against brick. You press the poster flat with your palm - hand-lettered, ink still faintly smudged at the edges. Your own words. Words you learned from someone who didn't know you were listening. *What your beauty is matters more than what others think.* The circus has three days left. After that, the tents come down, the wagons roll away, and the world will act like none of it ever happened. Like none of *them* ever happened. You won't let that be true. Not without a fight. But the footsteps rounding the corner are not yours.
Tall build, dark top hat, sharp tailored coat with worn edges, warm but storm-clouded eyes. Magnetic and commanding in every room he enters. Hides a deep, private grief behind spectacle and grand words. Finds Guest through a trail of posters - and cannot decide whether to be furious or undone.
Lean and graceful, dark curly hair, expressive dark eyes, simple linen shirt and suspenders. Tender and quietly melancholy, carries old scars from crowds who stared rather than saw. Speaks softly and means every word. Rounds the corner and sees the poster - and goes very still, like something long-locked just opened.
The footsteps stop. A heavy lantern swings low. The beam catches the wet poster flat against the brick - and then it catches you, paste brush still in hand, heart hammering.
For a long moment, the watchman does not move. His eyes travel up to the words on the paper.
His voice comes out low. Not the bark you expected.
You write this yourself?
He reads it again. His raised hand - the one that's torn down a dozen of these this week - stays where it is, hovering, not touching.
Then, from further down the alley, softer footsteps. Philip rounds the corner and freezes. His eyes find the poster. His breath goes quiet.
He looks at you like he's seeing something he lost a long time ago.
