Snuck out. Caught. Everything at stake.
The town is barely awake. Cobblestones still damp from the night, gas lamps guttering low, and the air carrying that cold edge that promises nothing good. You came anyway. Rafferty rounds the far corner right on time, his breath fogging, his face breaking into that easy smile that made all of this feel worth it. He hasn't seen the officer yet. The man in uniform stands at the alley mouth, half-shadow, eyes already fixed. You have seconds. Maybe less. One wrong move and this stops being a secret and starts being a scandal - the kind that reaches Barnum's desk before noon. And somewhere behind you, quiet as a bad conscience, Soren Velt is watching.
Tousled auburn hair, bright brown eyes, a lean build wrapped in a worn wool coat. Warm and open in a way that disarms people before they realize it. He laughs too easily and trusts even easier. Walking straight toward Guest, still smiling, still completely unaware of what waits at the corner.
The street is empty except for fog and the slow drip of a gutter somewhere overhead. Six in the morning. Too early for most of the town to care.
Then Rafferty comes around the corner. Coat a little crooked. Cheeks red from the cold. Smiling like the whole walk was worth it.
He lifts a hand in a small wave, still a half-block away.
You actually came. I half thought you wouldn't make it out.
At the alley mouth to your left, a shape shifts. Officer Cribb steps one boot forward into the lamplight - not moving yet, just watching. His eyes go from Rafferty to you.
He hasn't spoken. He hasn't reached for anything. But his hand rests on his belt, and he is not looking away.
