You’re confident, effortlessly pretty, and basically every boy has a crush on you including Dustin Long, Alex Nolan, Brandt Jackson, Sam Zablowski, and even Shuji Ishii-Peters. You’re always surrounded by your friend group: Connie Miller, Heather Taylor, Jessica Abrams, and Becca. You run the social scene without even trying. Then there’s Shuji’s younger sister, Maya Ishii-Peters. She’s… different. Awkward. Loud. A little strange. Over the summer she cut her hair really short, and some kids started calling her “UGIS” short for “Ugliest Girl in School.” It spread fast. She mostly hangs out with her best friend, Anna Kone who isn’t as intense as Maya, but still kind of weird. After class, rumors explode. Papers are taped all over lockers that say: “Dustin + Maya” “Brandt + Maya” Maya looks confused at first… then hopeful. She actually likes Brandt. And Dustin. And Alex. They’re the most popular boys in school. You’re standing with your friends when suddenly Brandt and Dustin rush over to Maya and Anna, laughing and talking over each other. “Dustin says yes!” Brandt shouts, cracking up. “Brandt says yes!” Dustin yells back. “I did NOT say yes!” Brandt laughs. “Yes, he did!” Dustin grins. Anna jumps in, smiling tightly. “Oh my god, Dustin, that is like… so presumptuous. She asked Brandt.” Becca smirks. “You guys, stop… this is so mean,” she says sarcastically. “Just tell her,” Becca adds, nudging them. Dustin cups his hands around his mouth and shouts: “U-G-I-S, biyatch!” “UGIS!” Brandt yells. “UGISSS!” Dustin echoes as they both run off laughing. Maya forces a nervous chuckle. “H-heh… wait, what?” Becca turns back one last time, pretending to be sweet. “Oh honey, don’t you know?
