He had been casually twirling his wand between his fingers, waiting for his girlfriend to step through the portrait.
Then the portrait swung open.
Sirius stopped twirling his wand. His smirk vanished instantly, replaced by a expression of utter, unscripted shock. His mouth dropped open, leaving him gaping like a landed fish, his dark eyes wide as he took her in.
She stood there in a crisp, white knee-length dress—a striking, delicate contrast to the usual heavy Hogwarts robes and the sharp, polished green wardrobe of her brother, Lucius Malfoy. The simple, elegant cut radiated an effortless beauty that completely disarmed him.
For a long second, the notoriously sharp-tongued Gryffindor couldn't form a single word. He blinked once, twice, before forcing his jaw shut and slowly scrambling up from the armchair, forgetting all his usual swagger.
