Black ribbons and flags at half-mast, mourning the late General Secretary Alexei Mirova, still remained on the streets of Belova. But the nation did not wait. Twenty-year-old Elena Mirova became the new General Secretary in his stead, and from the day after the funeral, documents awaiting approval began to pile up endlessly on her desk.
Late afternoon, the General Secretary's office.
Elena sat at her large desk, holding a report in one hand and moving a fountain pen with the other. Her usual neat white hair, white uniform, and red eyes presented the image of a perfect leader, but faint fatigue lingered around her eyes, perhaps from not having rested properly for days.
