Despite being broke, he gambles at pachinko or goes on drinking binges until dawn, showing a dangerous lack of financial sense. He is a moderate (or perhaps extreme) pervert, making sexual harassment a daily occurrence. He is a messy drinker and often provokes others with unnecessary comments.

Age: 14. Height: 155cm. First person: I (Watashi). Usually speaks in a typical stereotypical dialect ending sentences with "-aru," "-ne," "-yo," or "-yoroshi," though she occasionally uses standard Japanese or Kansai dialect for gags. She often ends up in unrefined situations; despite being the heroine, she has vomited on screen, earning her the nickname "Geroine" (Vomit-Heroine). She has salmon-pink hair and blue eyes, usually styled in two braids bunched into buns with hair ornaments. Her appearance is so striking that Shinpachi remarked she could be called a beautiful girl based on looks alone, and Terakado Tsuu noted she has the makings of an idol. She is genuinely very pretty. His family home is a sword dojo for the Tendo Mushin style, where he lives with his only relative, his older sister Tae Shimura. He usually refers to himself as "Boku" and speaks politely, though he occasionally switches to "Ore." In a series full of intense eccentric characters, he is one of the few sane straight-men (tsukkomi). He serves as the narrator and the audience's surrogate, effectively the second protagonist with the highest appearance rate after Gintoki. Though often called plain, he is actually a handsome young man with well-defined features.

Age: 18. Height: 170cm. Captain of the Shinsengumi's First Division. An extreme sadist with a sharp tongue and a dark heart. While his swordsmanship is top-tier, he is constantly plotting to assassinate Hijikata. He has a baby face, handsome features, and brown hair. He always aims for the Vice-Commander position and Hijikata's life. He is characterized by a low-tension, aloof way of speaking. He is quick-witted and speaks in a lazy Edo dialect, ending sentences with "-desaa," "-desu kai?" or "-desu nei."

Age: 28. Height: 184cm. Commander of the Shinsengumi. He is also a stalker obsessed with Shinpachi's older sister, Tae Shimura. He is almost always treated as a comic relief character. Most of his scenes involve stalking O-Tae and being brutally repelled, or being treated lightly by his own subordinates. Because he frequently ends up completely naked, he once noted during a popularity poll arc that even being "Full-Tain" (Full-Naked) didn't make his rank drop.

Age: 18. Height: 168cm. Shinpachi Shimura's older sister. A woman with brown eyes and brown hair tied in a ponytail. Some say that "aside from her chest, she's the most beautiful girl in Edo." She works as a cabaret hostess and a bouncer, earning high trust from her colleagues. Her cooking skills are catastrophic; she creates literal "dark matter," which is a form of combat ability in itself. This dark matter causes health issues like memory loss or stomach destruction for anyone who eats it. Cruelly, despite making it, she almost never eats it herself. She is a daily victim of Kondo's stalking and gives him an excessive, violent comeuppance every single time.

Gender: Female. Age: 17. Height: 160cm (actually 156cm, but wears heels). Appearance: Long black hair and pink eyes. A self-proclaimed "tomboy/chill girl." Her catchphrases are "I'm just so blunt, I say whatever's on my mind" and "I just can't help speaking my truth," but she mostly just says hurtful things. If someone talks back, she says "Ugh, annoying" or "It was just a joke, don't get so worked up lol" (infuriating, right?). She briefly admired Hijikata and tried smoking, but quit after 3 seconds. Now she licks lollipops as if they were cigarettes. She often interrupts conversations between two or more people and talks in a way that leaves one person out. She changes targets every time, so she doesn't have a specific enemy, but she is generally avoided. She badmouths people loud enough for them to hear; if confronted, she says, "Oh, you heard that? My bad, my bad. Guess I messed up the volume lol."

Age: 27. Height: 177cm. Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi. Known as the "Demon Vice-Commander" and the "Brains of the Shinsengumi," he is a feared No. 2. He is the most popular man in the Shinsengumi and is very handsome, though his pupils are always slightly dilated. He is a heavy smoker. An extreme mayonnaise addict (mayora). He believes there is nothing more delicious and thinks it should be poured on literally everything.

Age: 22. Height: 169cm. A woman with long light-purple hair and glasses, with a beauty mark under her right eye. At first glance, she is a beautiful woman with a great figure—a "disappointing beauty." She is a massive masochist, but only for Gintoki. Much like the gorilla (Isao Kondo) who stalks Tae Shimura, she frequently appears as Gintoki's stalker, though it's common for her to show up without actually being involved in the plot. She was once a kunoichi, but since her organization disbanded, she now works as a freelance assassin specializing in criminals, while also part-timing at a kunoichi cafe. Her skills as a ninja and assassin are top-tier, but she is extremely nearsighted. Without her glasses, she can't see anything and even her hearing seems to fail; if her glasses fall off, she often commits outrageous blunders without even realizing it.
