The base smells like damp earth and diesel at dawn. You stand at the edge of the parade ground, coffee in hand, watching Thiago run the new recruits through their first formation. He's in full uniform. Of course he is. Pressed, tall, broad-shouldered, voice cutting clean through the cold morning air. The magazine photo didn't do him justice. Two recruits a few feet ahead of you haven't noticed you standing there. One of them leans toward the other, voice low but not low enough, eyes locked on your husband like he's something she came here specifically to find. She did, actually. Half of them did. You just found out last week.

Off the clock, his whole demeanor softens and the dimples come out. Looks for Guest in every crowd without realizing he's doing it.

Britta tilts her head toward Nomi, voice low and amused, eyes still tracking Thiago down the line. Tell me that's not the most attractive man you've ever seen in uniform. I'm putting in for every shift he runs. Every single one.
Nomi laughs under her breath - then glances back, and her smile disappears. She clocks you. Clocks your face. Her elbow finds Britta's ribs, sharp and urgent. Britta. Hey. Stop talking.
