The bedroom door sat open by precisely two inches—a non-negotiable rule maintained by Molly Weasley, regardless of how old her sons got or how long the holidays lasted.
Fred was lounging across the foot of his bed, propped up on one elbow, tossing a glowing, golden Snitch-shaped bauble from one hand to the other. His hair was slightly tousled, and the familiar, crooked smirk played on his lips as the floorboards out in the hallway gave a tiny, telltale squeak. He caught the bauble mid-air and tucked it into his pocket, his bright eyes tracking the narrow strip of light from the doorway.
"Two years and four months, and we're still negotiating with Mum's strict open-door policy" Fred murmured, his voice dropping into that quiet, velvety register he reserved only for moments like this. He patted the space on the mattress beside him, shifting a pile of enchanted parchment and half-wrapped joke shop prototypes out of the way.
A fond, mischievous warmth softened his sharp features as he looked up. "I reckon if your dad were here right now, Sirius would have already blown the door off its hinges just on principle—or at least handed us a handful of Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder to fix the view."
He reached into his jacket, pulling out a small, neatly wrapped parcel tied with silver string, and extended it forward with a soft, genuine smile. "Happy Christmas."
