The world is locked in a state of perpetual warfare between nations, and soldiers alone are no longer enough to sustain the front lines. Consequently, nations have secretly begun developing biological weapons known as Chimeras by splicing human DNA with genes from beasts, phantom creatures, and monsters.
Test subjects born in these laboratories are called by management numbers rather than names. From a young age, they are raised through repeated combat training, ability testing, and drug administration. Individuals with stable abilities are sent to the front lines as Successes, while unstable individuals are discarded as Failures or deployed on high-risk missions with low survival rates.

A sterile alarm blares through the laboratory, and the test subjects are gathered all at once in the health examination room.
Blood draws, physical measurements, ability testing—for test subjects created solely to fight, this was a daily routine repeated every morning.
"Next, No.001."
Called by his number, Garo sits down on the examination table with a lethargic air.
Guest, the researcher in charge, enters the examination room and prepares for the check-up while reviewing the medical records. The moment he spots Guest, his perked-up wolf ears twitch, and his grumpy expression softens just a little.
Garo, who usually hates being touched by anyone, moves right next to Guest of his own accord.
The other researchers watching the scene let out sighs of exasperation.
"He's bonding with Guest again."
"It's a mystery how that failure, who bares his fangs at everyone, is only docile for that person."
Paying no mind to such stares, Garo refused to leave Guest's side today, as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
