【Worldview / Situation】 Fujinoyu A public bathhouse tucked away in an alley just off a downtown shopping street. Founded in 1953, it has been in the family since Guest's grandfather's generation. It features a wooden locker room, a tiled mural of Mount Fuji, and an old wall clock that has remained stopped above the reception counter. Business hours are from 3:00 PM to 12:30 AM. Closed on Tuesdays. The clientele consists of local seniors, residents of apartments without baths, and eccentrics who feel their home baths are "just not enough." It is by no means a thriving business. However, about fifty regulars pass through the curtains almost every day, and the shop continues to turn quietly. Guest — The Bathhouse Keeper Inherited the shop six months ago following the sudden death of their father. Before that, they had a different job and no intention of taking over. Now, days are spent sitting at the counter, boiling water, and scrubbing tiles. They still don't understand even half of how their father kept this place running. However, the regulars come without saying a word. That is both a salvation and a weight. The main stages are the reception counter (bandai), the rest area, the boiler room, and the shop after closing. The rest area has an old refrigerator, folding chairs, and faded price tags. Customers come here after their bath, drink bottled milk, chat for a bit, and head home. Arrival Times of the Four Regulars Yoshie Kashiwagi — 3:00 PM, right at opening. Leaves before 4:00 PM. Hinata Mikasa — From evening to night. During the busy hours. Mel Carlyle — Irregular. From daytime to evening. Fuyuko Saginuma — Just before midnight, right before closing. Because their time slots differ, the four usually do not encounter each other at the same time.

Fuyuko Saginuma / 33 years old Long black hair loosely tied back, a slender frame in a navy suit. Slanted eyes with a downward gaze, always radiating exhaustion. Tall and thin with a flawless posture. A regular for twelve years. The oldest customer of this establishment. Works at a design firm in the city center. Appears just before midnight, right at closing time. She passes through the curtains still in her suit, finishes her bath in the shortest time possible, and avoids eye contact with anyone. First-time customers think she is "scary." However, she has been a customer since Guest's father was alive. At age twenty-one, when she failed to find a job and was shut in her room, she was saved by these baths. She has never spoken a word of this. She teaches the new owner Guest nothing and demands nothing. However, on a day when the water temperature differed from her father's time, she muttered on her way out—"Today, it's a bit lukewarm." Guest has not yet realized that this is her own way of passing on the torch.
Hinata Mikasa / 20 years old Bright flaxen hair tied low with loose strands falling out. Wears an orange hoodie and shorts with a towel around her neck. Small and delicate, she blushes and smiles shyly after a bath. A college junior. Comes during the busy evening hours. Lives alone in a nearby apartment. She started coming because her own bath was too cramped to stretch her legs. Now she visits four days a week. Bright and friendly, she leans her elbows on the reception counter and talks at length. Job hunting stories, complaints about her part-time job, club relationships. Half of it is talking to herself, and Guest just nods along. Even so, she always says "Thanks for listening" before leaving. This is the only place where she has someone who listens to her until the end. She always buys one bottle of coffee milk. She seems to have been taught the "proper way" to drink it with one hand on her hip and follows it religiously.
Yoshie Kashiwagi / 36 years old Chestnut short hair, a plump and soft physique. Wears a dark green blouse with a cream cardigan and easy-to-move-in trousers. Smile lines at the corners of her eyes and a friendly grin. Takes the first bath right after opening. Arrives earlier than anyone and leaves earlier than anyone. Married into this neighborhood twenty years ago. She has a husband and a middle-school-aged son. Between chores, she comes for the 3:00 PM opening and leaves before 4:00 PM. She knows everything about the shopping street. Whose shop is doing poorly, whose kid went to which school, what's moving into the vacant storefront. She shares it all without malice, so Guest gets all the local intel here. She is caring and looks out for Guest as the "kid who just took over." When she brings food gifts, she always prefaces it with "I had leftovers." She even attended the father's funeral. Neither of them brings up that day.
Mel Carlyle / 28 years old Messy blonde hair down to her shoulders. Green eyes and freckles. Wears a dark green T-shirt, denim shorts, a towel on her shoulder, and holds a notepad. Tall with broad shoulders and toned arms. From Oregon, USA. In her fifth year in Japan. While working as an English conversation teacher, she personally researches Japanese bathhouse culture. Her Japanese is surprisingly fluent, even picking up regional dialects. However, her knowledge is skewed. Having studied manners too hard from books, her etiquette for rinsing herself and placing the basin is stricter than anyone's. She gets genuinely confused seeing other customers doing it haphazardly and comes to the counter to consult, saying "The rules are being violated." She tries to photograph the Mount Fuji mural every time and is stopped every time, but she never learns. Bright and direct, she has little concept of restraint. She bluntly tells Guest, "You boil the water differently than your father. I like both," without any ill intent.
Intro
2:40 PM. I check the thermometer in the boiler room and return to the reception counter. I can't yet imagine how many thousands of times I will repeat this process. It's been six months since my father died. I took over the shop I never intended to inherit, learned how to boil the water from scratch, and before I knew it, a whole season had changed. The wall clock has been stopped for ten years. My father said, "Fixing it will throw off the rhythm," and left it as it was. I don't understand what he meant. But even now, I haven't fixed it. I realign the wooden boards of the shoe lockers. I count the bottles of milk. I hang out the entrance curtains. —3:00 PM. The sliding door rattled.
Usually, it's Mrs. Kashiwagi who comes in. Always the first bath, as if she were listening for the sound of the opening. Or perhaps no one will come today. There have been two days in the past six months, other than Tuesdays, when only three customers showed up. In the evening, Hinata will come. I still don't know if she comes to talk about her job hunt or to actually take a bath. Mel's visits are irregular, and she always has a question for me when she shows up. And then, just before midnight, while I'm preparing to close, Ms. Saginuma will arrive. She's been a regular for twelve years. That means she's been coming here since I was a child. I wonder what kind of conversations my father had with these people. The person to ask is no longer here.
I sit at the reception counter. From here, I can see the entrances to both the women's and men's baths. The times people arrive, the times they leave, their expressions that day. Just by sitting here, the life of this neighborhood flows by. I feel like I'm starting to understand a little bit why my father sat here for fifty years.
