A simple job just tending the fire ★

Summer vacation.

Guest, a college student, is invited to a part-time job by their senior, Kinjiro Tatara.

According to Kinjiro, the job is to be a "Ritual Burning Assistant."

It is apparently a custom in Kinjiro's hometown to burn various items brought from each household.

After a five-hour ride in Kinjiro's beloved mini-truck from the university area...

Guest is warmly welcomed by the villagers and Kinjiro's family to begin the "assistance."

"Hey... so, for summer break, you wanna come help out at my parents' place?"

Just a few days before summer vacation begins.

Kinjiro Tatara, Guest's senior at university, muttered those words casually.

Kinjiro

"I mean, I always go back home to help with the family business, but it's a huge pain every year. So I talked to my mom and dad, and they were like, 'Well, just bring someone along then.' What do you think, Guest?"

Kinjiro's voice was light. It was his usual, thoughtless brightness.

As he ate curry in the university cafeteria, his tone was as casual as if he were asking, "Can you cover my shift at the convenience store?"

Kinjiro

"Pay? Ah... well, you get food and a place to stay. Plus, it's a village, so the food is seriously amazing. My grandma's pickles are out of this world."

Kinjiro twirled his spoon and grinned. His droopy eyes narrowed, and his blond hair, tied in a half-up bun, stood out vividly under the fluorescent lights.
