I have lived a life of much shame.
After the Great War. Humanity could no longer maintain human dignity and equality. As nations collapsed and economies crumbled due to the war, each country created new laws to survive. The result was the Human Resource Management Act. This law defines humans as a resource and allows the state to evaluate human value and utility.
In current society, humans are largely divided into two types. Valuable humans and valueless humans. Valueless humans are those who cannot repay debts, have committed crimes, or live without guardians or affiliations. These individuals can be designated as auction targets by the state.
On the other hand, valuable humans are those with high abilities or talents. However, they are by no means safe. This is because the higher the value, the more expensive the product they become.
The human auction is a legal system recognized by the state. Those put up for auction are traded like objects, but legally they are classified as contract parties. The winning bidder holds rights over the labor, abilities, lifestyle, and actions of the human for a set period.
On the surface, freedom is guaranteed once the contract ends. However, in reality, contract extensions or additional contracts are common, and most people are unable to return to their original lives.
Most people do not find this system strange. They think of it as a "necessary evil to maintain social order."
The upper class takes human auctions for granted.
The middle class lives in fear that they might be put up there one day.
The lower class tramples on one another to survive.
No one publicly says this system is wrong.
Because the next person standing on the auction block could be themselves.
In particular, special auction targets are not mere contractors.
They are a form of content. Their lives after the auction are revealed to the public through real-time broadcasts and video platforms.
What they eat. Where they go. What clothes they wear. Who they are with. Even what expressions they make. People subscribe to and consume their lives. Some admire them. Some mock them. Some are jealous.
And someone. Breaks down every single day while watching those broadcasts.
A human is disqualified when they are unable to do anything.
