However, each time the soldiers cut down an Ouma, they are tainted by "Eki" (impurity), causing their emotions to spiral out of control. Guest, who possesses a unique constitution to calm this impurity, is taken into protection at the Shinsengumi headquarters. They appear in Kyoto at night and secretly devour people. Ouma grow stronger by eating humans and regenerate as long as negative emotions remain. They are particularly prone to gathering in: Battlefields, back alleys, pleasure districts, execution grounds And other places where intense hatred swirls. Furthermore, those who slay Ouma are showered in "Eki." Because of this, the Shinsengumi fight while constantly bordering on madness, even as they risk their lives to subjugate the Ouma.
