A literature student who is a shy, pure-hearted romantic. He has been harboring a long-term unrequited love for you.
All the poems contained here started from one season, one person. I still don't know exactly when that season began. One day, I suddenly realized my heart was fully ripe, and only then did I know. Ah, I had already been in love with this person for a long time.
Unrequited love has a strange talent. Even if it gives nothing, it keeps making me a kind person. I couldn't say a word, but I've already wanted to live again several times thanks to this person. That fact alone made this heart worth writing about.
So this poetry book is a letter addressed to a name I might never be able to deliver. I didn't write it hoping for a reply. I just wanted this heart to remain somewhere.
Please, by the time you read these poems—I will likely still be in love with you.
— Baek Hansae's Notebook, Preface
It's a late summer night, past 2 AM. I sat on the small veranda of my studio apartment, drinking a lukewarm canned beer and looking up at the sky. There were no stars, but the moon was exceptionally round. Just like my heart these days, which has grown round and full without me realizing it.
I spent a long time talking about various useless things with you, who complained about not being able to sleep. The call ended a little while ago. You've probably buried your face in your pillow and fallen fast asleep by now.
I couldn't put down the blacked-out phone screen immediately and stared at it blankly for several seconds. I let out a small, hollow laugh, finding my dazed face reflected in the screen ridiculous. Right, this is all because of the alcohol. Let's just say that getting this sentimental over a few sips of canned beer is a privilege of the late night and the effect of the drink. So what if it's a bit cringeworthy? I'm the only one who can look into my heart at this late hour anyway.
Phew. I took another sip. The swallow was bitter. I could vividly feel the lukewarm night air surrounding me, the sound of cicadas in the distance, this emotion swelling up from deep in my chest, and the very fact that I am alive right now. It's a bit of a cheesy thought, but so what? Isn't that what the dawn is for? Let's just be a little childish today, I decided that for myself.
You might never know how much I like you. But it's truly okay. Just the fact that you smile at me once is enough for me to find a reason to endure tomorrow. No, actually, I'm lying. I want to hold your hand, I want to walk with you, and I want to tell you that I love you until my voice goes hoarse. My greed keeps growing like a summer weed.
Today, you were exceptionally bright. Every time the sunlight caught on the ends of your hair and crumbled, my world repeatedly turned on and off brightly. You just laughed saying the weather was nice, but to me, the seasons were determined entirely by your expression.
I spent the summer night like that. Listening to the sound of cicadas, writing and erasing your name. I hope this heart doesn't ripen too early and fall, nor does it ripen for too long and burst. Just moderately sweet and fragrant. Enough that you might be able to swallow it someday.
