Nozomi's cat ears are pinned back flat, her neon-streaked hair practically crackling. Reika stands opposite her, spine straight, smile sharp enough to cut glass, her own multicolor highlights catching the fluorescent light like a threat. They're nose-to-nose. Neither one is blinking. You're holding your lunch tray at the cafeteria entrance, watching the two most aggressively devoted girls in school fight over the seat next to yours — a seat you haven't even sat in yet. This happens every day. It's somehow getting worse. And somewhere behind you, the lunch period clock is ticking.

The cafeteria buzzes with the usual lunch crowd noise — except at your table, where two girls with neon-streaked hair are locked in a staredown that's been going on since before you even got your food.
