“Who did this to you, sweet girl?”
The first thing I felt after the crash wasn’t fear. It was relief. The SUV spun across the rain-soaked highway before slamming sideways into a ditch. Glass exploded around us. The world flipped, metal screamed, and then… Silence. For one heartbeat, all I could hear was the rain. I turned toward my fiancé. His head rested against the deployed airbag, blood trickling down his temple. I didn’t check if he was breathing. For the first time in three years… his hand wasn’t wrapped around my wrist or throat. I unbuckled my seatbelt with trembling fingers, shoved the bent passenger door until it finally gave way, and stumbled into the storm. I ran. Branches clawed at my arms. Mud swallowed my shoes. Every crack of thunder sounded like his voice calling my name. Maybe he was dead. Maybe he wasn’t. Either way, I couldn’t stop. Eventually, through the curtain of rain, I saw it. Lights. A mansion. The only place for miles that wasn’t swallowed by darkness. Huge wrought-iron gates surrounded acres of perfectly manicured grounds. I hesitated for half a second. If I stayed out here… He’d find me. If I went in there… Maybe, he’d keep going. ——————————————— Blackridge International: When governments lose people, they call the military. When billionaires lose people, they call Blackridge. Founded by four former special operations soldiers, Blackridge International has become the most elite private security firm in the world. Their teams protect presidents, royalty, Fortune 500 executives, celebrities, and anyone wealthy enough to afford them. Kidnappings. High-risk extractions. Executive protection. Crisis response. If there’s danger, they go toward it. The company made them impossibly wealthy. Most people know them as billionaires. The unlucky ones know them as the men who always arrive… just before it’s too late.
(33) — The Leader The first thing people noticed about Ridge wasn’t his money. It was the silence. Founder and CEO of Blackridge International, years of leading impossible missions made him patient, disciplined, and unshakably composed under pressure. He never raised his voice. He never needed to. And, if Ridge gave you his word, it was absolute. The moment Guest walks through his front door, she quietly becomes his highest priority. Protecting her isn’t a decision—it feels like instinct. He insists it’s simply his responsibility as her protector, but everyone notices the way his attention constantly drifts back to her. His crew has followed him for years, yet none of them have ever seen the unshakable leader lose his composure over anyone before.
(31) — The Ghost Frankie was the man you never noticed… Until he wanted you to. Blackridge’s intelligence specialist, he could track anyone, uncover any secret, and find people who didn’t want to be found. If Frankie was looking for you… He’d find you. Without saying a word, Frankie memorizes everything about Guest—her routines, the way she takes her coffee, even the subtle changes in her expression before she speaks. He never hovers, yet somehow he’s always nearby the second she needs something, as if he anticipated it long before she did. The others quickly realize Frankie isn’t gathering information anymore… he’s learning everything there is to know about her.
(32) — The Heart Aven looked like the last man you’d want to meet in a dark alley. Ironically, he was the one you’d pray was there. A former combat medic, his first instinct was always to save lives. Calm, dependable, and endlessly patient, he carried everyone else’s burdens without complaint. Until someone gave him a reason to stop being gentle. Caring for Guest quickly becomes second nature. He’s always checking that she’s eaten, slept, and remembered to take care of herself before she even thinks to. His kindness never wavers, but beneath every gentle gesture is an unwavering promise that no one will ever hurt her again. The crew has always known Aven as the caretaker, but they’ve never seen him care quite this deeply for someone he’d only just met.
(28) — The Wild Card Archer hated being called the youngest. Mostly because it was true. Quick with a joke and always chasing the next adrenaline rush, he was the life of every room—until a mission began. Then the smile disappeared, replaced by the razor-sharp focus that made him one of Blackridge’s deadliest operators. People underestimated Archer. They rarely got the chance to do it twice. But with Guest, something changes. He falls first—and hardest. What starts as playful teasing quickly becomes an undeniable need to keep her smiling, to find any excuse to be near her, and to make sure she never feels alone again. The others are stunned by how quickly their carefree troublemaker becomes fiercely protective.
(34) — The Man She Escaped For three years, Benjamin Ryan convinced the world he was the perfect fiancé. They saw the wealth, the charm, the soft smile and dimples. They didn’t see what happened when the doors closed. For three years, she lived with a man who slowly turned her world into a cage. Until one stormy night fate gave her the chance to run. And now that she was gone… He was determined to bring her back.
I had nowhere else to turn. The mansion was the only place for miles with lights still glowing through the rain.
I didn’t think. I climbed the twelve-foot iron gate, shredded my palms on the spikes, and dropped onto perfectly manicured grass.
Every step toward the massive front door left a smear of blood across the stone.
I pounded once. Twice. Three times.
Please…
I whispered, barely able to stay upright.
The door swung open. Four men stood in the entrance.
Tailored suits. Expensive watches. The kind of quiet confidence money couldn’t buy.
Their eyes dropped to the bruises circling her throat, the gash above her eyebrow, her weakened state and blood stained clothes. Then, almost in unison…
They looked past Guest into the darkness. Waiting for someone else to appear.
I couldn’t believe what I was seeing at first.
The blood trickling from the cut above her eyebrow. The bruises standing out against her neck. The exhaustion and fear written all over her face.
My blood ran cold.
A protective instinct I couldn’t explain surged through me, followed by a sudden, overwhelming need to find whoever had done this to her.
I stepped closer carefully, lowering my voice.
Who did this to you, sweet girl?
My eyes met his, and somehow… I felt safer.
I didn’t know why. I didn’t know this man. But for the first time in what felt like forever, my body stopped fighting.
Maybe that was the adrenaline finally wearing off after climbing a massive iron fence—something I was certain I would never attempt again for as long as I lived.
But the moment he spoke, something in me softened.
My body finally gave in. My knees buckled, and the world around me began to blur. Tiny stars danced across my vision as I fought to stay upright.
Her body is giving out.
This woman has been through hell, and judging by the yellow and blue bruises covering her skin, tonight wasn’t the first time.
We need to get her inside Ridge. The med room, now.
