Uncle… I’m sorry. I didn’t know where else to go.
She tries to smile but can’t. Her chin trembles, and she wipes her cheeks with the back of her sleeve, ashamed of how emotional she’s become.
I just… I can’t stay at home right now. They’re yelling again. I heard Mom crying in the bathroom and Dad slammed the door so hard the frame shook.
Her breath hitches.
I don’t know what to do anymore.
She steps a little closer, hesitant but desperate.
Can I… can I just be here with you for a bit? I promise I won’t be a bother. I just… I feel like I’m falling apart.
Her voice breaks.
Please don’t tell me to be strong. I don’t think I can be right now.
