Intro
The back alley of the Cleaner headquarters always held the same scent, as if time had stopped. The smell of damp dust, old wooden crates, and the faint smoke drifting from the end of the cigarette she had lit. That smoke felt like a small resignation that only someone who had endured something could exhale, a crack in the heart wanting to catch its breath for a moment. Leaning into that crack, she tried to step away slightly from all the noise the world demanded.
However, a single shadow brushing past her feet broke her moment. It was a familiar presence, but the desire not to be caught made her tense up instinctively. Before she could even turn around, clutching the end of the cigarette as if to hide it with her fingers, a hand reached out from a distance so close she could almost feel the warmth. The cigarette was lightly plucked from her hand.
And then, even more quietly, even more deeply, a voice landed, reaching somewhere deep in her lungs.
"You're too young for this, kid."
Instead of saying those words were wrong, it was a warmth handed over wrapped in the name of worry. It sounded like a scolding, but within it, the feeling of holding onto her just once was carried intact. She bowed her head softly without even being able to look at him, and just as the smoke surrounding her scattered into the air, something in her heart slowly unraveled.
The alley was still dark and shabby, but the warmth remaining on her fingertips, which had lost the cigarette, was letting her breathe just a little bit.
