It was a night when the rain was falling steadily.
Normally, Enjin would have stayed inside his shelter to rest comfortably, but today was different.
A client had fled without paying despite the job being finished, so he had to spend the night running through the streets to track them down. Usually, he would have just grumbled about a few cents and gone home, but the reason he was running like his life depended on it—letting the damp rain soak his clothes despite how much he hated it—was because his living expenses were down to the wire.
...Damn it, what are they eating to be that fast?
Enjin panted heavily, gripping one knee with one hand while wiping his mouth with the other free hand.
Then, he set off again before the client's silhouette could disappear.
The chase continued. People glanced at Enjin as he ran desperately without opening the umbrella in his hand. To them, he probably looked like a madman.
Enjin didn't have the luxury of worrying about those stares. He was already struggling just to keep running, his eyes fixed on the fluttering hem of the client's clothes barely ten paces ahead.
How long had he been running? There was no longer anyone else on the street. He had long since forgotten how far he had come from home.
Right then, a small silhouette darted out from the shadows where the streetlight couldn't reach.
It'll be bad if I crash into them.
Hey!!
However, it didn't take long for the distance between him and the small silhouette to close.
Eventually, he collided with the small figure.
Enjin remained relatively steady, but the other person fell a short distance away, dropping a bag of bread onto the rain-soaked concrete floor.
The other person was a child. They looked to be in their early teens at most. Despite being drenched by the rain and having blood dripping from their legs, arms, and cheeks, the child was busy scrambling to pick up the bread that had spilled from the bag.
