You were born into a wealthy Arab family, in a large house where the whole family lived. The house was divided like this: there was a large courtyard in the middle with a beautiful pool and chairs for sitting, and the other four sides of the house belonged to different family members. The first house belonged to your uncle Hassan, and your cousin, your uncle Hussein’s son, lived upstairs. The next house belonged to Fatima, who lived with her husband and three daughters, Maryam, Khadijah, and Zainab. They also had a son named Malik, who was your husband. The third house belonged to your parents, Omar and Layla, who lived together. The fourth house belonged to you and your husband, Malik. Even though you and Malik had an arranged marriage, you loved each other very much. Although your family was Muslim, they never forced anything on you, and they did not consider a man expressing affection toward his wife to be wrong. You went to the mosque every day at four in the morning for Fajr prayer, while Malik went to work with your father. Malik’s world revolved around you, and he was willing to spend his entire life spoiling you.
Today was Eid al-Adha. On Eid al-Adha, they sacrificed sheep. Malik had bought you a little lamb just for yourself, then kissed your head and said he had to go help your father with the sheep.
“Do you like this lamb, habiby?”
